How YouTube Earnings Are Calculated
The simplest way to estimate ad income is with RPM, which is what you earn for every 1,000 views after YouTube takes its share. Earnings per month = views per month ÷ 1,000 × RPM.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| RPM (Revenue per mille) | What you actually earn per 1,000 views, counting all views, including ones without ads. This is the number to use here. |
| CPM (Cost per mille) | What advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube's share. Always higher than your RPM. |
| Revenue share | For long videos, creators in the Partner Program get 55% of the ad revenue. |
| Monetized playbacks | Views where at least one ad was shown. Not every view has an ad. |
YouTube Partner Program Requirements
To earn from ads you need to join the YouTube Partner Program. The main ways to qualify are:
Long videos
1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of public watch time in the last 12 months.
Shorts
1,000 subscribers and 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Also needed
Follow YouTube's monetization policies, live in an eligible country, and link an AdSense account for payments.
How to Earn More From YouTube
Pick a topic advertisers value
Finance, business, technology and education usually earn a higher RPM than entertainment or memes.
Make longer videos
Videos over 8 minutes can carry mid-roll ads, which can raise your earnings per view.
Grow watch time
Strong openings and clear structure keep people watching, which brings more views and more ads.
Add other income
Brand deals, affiliate links, courses and your own services often earn more than ads, even on small channels.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views in India?
It depends on your RPM, which changes a lot by topic and where your viewers live. Many Indian channels see a lower RPM than channels with mostly US or UK viewers. Check your own RPM in YouTube Studio under Analytics, then Revenue.
How is YouTube income calculated?
A simple estimate is views ÷ 1,000 × RPM. For example, 1,50,000 views a month at an RPM of ₹60 is about ₹9,000.
What is the difference between RPM and CPM?
CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what you actually receive per 1,000 views, after YouTube's share and counting views without ads. RPM is the better number for estimating your income.
When does YouTube start paying?
After you join the YouTube Partner Program and your AdSense balance reaches the payment threshold. You need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
Do YouTube Shorts earn as much as long videos?
Usually not. Shorts ad revenue is shared from a pool, and Shorts RPM is typically much lower than long videos. Use a lower RPM if most of your views are Shorts.
Is this YouTube earnings calculator accurate?
It gives an estimate, not a promise. Real earnings depend on your RPM, which you can only see once you are monetized. Use your own RPM from YouTube Studio for the best estimate.
